How to Replace a Smart Key Fob

How to Replace a Smart Key Fob

Smart key fobs have become a huge part of our lives – in fact, we use them every day! The truth is, when it comes to smart car keys, we’re often so caught up in getting to and from work, we don’t think about the simple act of unlocking our car and using our smart key fob to start the engine. But it’s an essential item that quite literally starts our day, in so many ways.

However, just like a normal key, smart key fobs can have their problems too. What if nothing happens when you push to start? Or it locks and unlocks inconsistently? There are definitely various components to consider when it comes to smart key replacements – and we’re here to tell you what steps to take if you have problems.

What Happens when the Smart Key Stops Working?

If you find issues within your smart key, that doesn’t mean you can’t still get to work. Simply press the silver release button on your fob. This will reveal the actual car key within your fob so you can manually unlock and start your car.

However, there are two approaches to take if your fob stops working. Firstly, check the model year of your car. If it’s less than five years old, you likely have a warranty, and your local car dealership should offer a key fob replacement. The downside of this is many dealerships still have to charge for programming or labor, so if you’ have to remain within a certain budget, this isn’t going to be a viable option for you.

If your car is older than five years, then you can consider other alternative services, that still get your smart key replaced and ready to go.

Call Your Local Locksmith

Automotive locksmiths have the same technology and capabilities as a dealership but won’t cost you the same price. Just like getting a key cut, a remote key can be reprogramed and dealt with accordingly. A locksmith is capable of programming and cutting any key you need – and they can come directly to you, which is a huge benefit compared to going to a dealership.

The process is simple. First, find a new car fob online, that is compatible with the make and model of your car. Once this has been ordered and arrived, your locksmith will take your new smart fob, and program the fab accordingly to fit your car.

What to do in the Meantime?

While you wait for a fob to arrive, and your key fob doesn’t work, just use your regular key in the ignition and go about your day normally. Smart key duplication doesn’t take long – it’s just waiting for the proper materials to arrive.
